not trying to put you off
thats a good deal, just remember crash costs are alot higher on a 500 than a 450,the few here are 100-150 pound crashes, two were just panic and one was into an oak tree

I hear you. I thought long and hard about it, and nearly did not go for it. I have though (as my friend lost all his cables) just ordered a new Phoenix V3, and will not even touch it until I have had a few hours on that. i think that is the wise thing to do.

    shaggy,

I almost did the same exact thing you did.

I flew a coaxial cheapie like a pro for a few weeks then decided to get an Align 550EX 3G.
At the store they had Phoenix running on a nice 54" flat screen. I said what the heck, let me try so the guy set up the sim for me. I could not hold a hover. I crashed it.
I bought the DX8 phoenix sim and have been practicing about 3 to 4 hours a week.
Now 4 weeks later I bought an MCPX and cannot hold a hover. I almost took my eyes out today. I lifted it beyond hovering levels and it suddenly came at my face. I ducked. It crashed. I had to replace the linkages.

    LOL Practice a lot!

The MCPX is not a toy, I cannot imagine how much your lovely 500E is moreso not a toy.

It gonna be a challenge, There is no doubt about it. But I and the boy really want to give it a go. BUT, we will walk before we can run. I just could not turn down this deal, especially baring in mind I was going to spend the same amount on a Blade.

I think you did the right thing, but if its a second hand heli I would reccomend you find a local club and get it checked over before you try and fly. Also with the 500 being that little big bigger I would suggest you fly at a club rather than in the local park, and at least make sure you have BMFA or RCHA insurance.

I learn't on a raptor 30 which is a little bit bigger and I found as long as you take it slow you will be fine and hopefully won't have too many hard landings!

The best size helecopter to learn to fly on is a 50 size, raptor or Trex 600, attach a hoola hoop to the skids so it as much harder to tip it over and away you go, DX7 ofr similar for the transmitter
Thats if you are serious about learning to fly!!

I learned to fly with a raptor 50, with out the luxury of a SIM, so you'll be fine, I know someone who flew the sim for a year then went out and bought a gaui 550 and flew loops and inverted on his first day!!! he was a young guy and nothing seemed to phase him. Go for it.

Thanks for the advice Mark. I wont have time for clubs to be honest. When I used I used to fly Fixed wing I also found them very difficult to get into.

I am lucky on the land front. I shoot 5000 Acres for a a farmer, across Kent. He is more than happy for me to fly on it which is a plus.
